Chiropractor Talks About Headaches
Headaches are common, but they are not all the same. Some may be related to stress, poor sleep, dehydration, muscle tension, posture, or problems with movement in the neck and upper back. Others, such as migraines, can have different triggers and may need a broader treatment plan.
At Family Chiropractic of Alexandria, we look at the whole picture. That includes when your headaches started, where you feel the pain, what makes them better or worse, and whether neck stiffness, posture, movement, or a past injury may be playing a role.
The goal is to understand what may be contributing to your headaches and decide what type of care makes sense.
Common Types of Headaches
Some of the most common headache types include:
- Tension headaches
- Migraines
- Cluster headaches
- Headaches related to neck problems
- Headaches following an injury
Headaches can also be influenced by things such as:
- Stress
- Poor sleep
- Dehydration
- Skipping meals
- Long periods at a computer or phone
- Muscle tightness
- Poor posture
- Certain foods or drinks
- Changes in routine
- Previous neck or head injuries
Because there are so many possible causes, it is important not to assume that every headache needs the same treatment.
Can Neck Problems Contribute to Headaches?
Yes. Some headaches are connected to problems in the neck.
Tight muscles, limited neck movement, poor posture, or irritation of the joints and tissues around the neck may contribute to pain that travels into the head.
This is one reason headaches are sometimes seen along with neck pain, shoulder tension, or stiffness in the upper back.
People who spend long hours working at a desk, looking down at a phone, driving, or doing repetitive tasks may also notice that headaches become worse as the day goes on.
How We Evaluate Headaches
Your first visit should involve more than simply identifying where your head hurts.
Your chiropractor may ask about:
- When the headaches started
- How often they happen
- Where the pain is located
- How long headaches usually last
- What seems to trigger them
- Whether you also have neck pain or stiffness
- Previous injuries or accidents
- Sleep habits
- Work and computer habits
- Exercise and activity levels
A physical examination may include checking your posture, neck movement, muscle tension, strength, and how the joints of the neck and upper back are moving.
Imaging is not needed for every headache. If your history or examination suggests that additional testing or another healthcare provider is needed, that should be part of the plan.
How Chiropractic Care May Help
For some patients, headaches may be connected to neck stiffness, muscle tension, joint restrictions, or poor movement patterns.
Depending on what we find, care may include:
- Chiropractic adjustments
- Gentle joint movement
- Posture correction
- Neck and upper-back stretching
- Range-of-motion exercises
- Strengthening exercises
- Ergonomic recommendations
- Rehabilitation exercises
Our Fitness & Rehab services may also be used when posture, weakness, limited mobility, or muscle imbalance is contributing to the problem.
The purpose is not simply to treat the headache for a few minutes. We also want to identify problems that may be placing repeated stress on the neck and upper body.
Posture Can Matter More Than You Think
Many people spend hours each day looking at a computer, tablet, or phone.
Over time, sitting with the head pushed forward or the shoulders rounded can place additional strain on the muscles of the neck and upper back. That does not mean posture causes every headache, but it may be an important factor for some people.
Small changes can sometimes make a difference, including:
- Raising your computer screen
- Taking regular movement breaks
- Avoiding long periods looking down at a phone
- Adjusting your chair and desk
- Stretching during the day
- Strengthening the muscles that support good posture
A good treatment plan should look at what you do between office visits as well as what happens during treatment.
Headaches After an Auto Accident or Injury
Headaches can also develop after a car accident, sports injury, fall, or other trauma.
Even if there was no direct hit to the head, a rapid movement of the neck can cause soreness, stiffness, and other symptoms.
If headaches begin after an injury, tell your healthcare provider. The type of injury and your other symptoms can help determine whether chiropractic care is appropriate or whether additional evaluation is needed.
When a Headache Needs Immediate Medical Attention
Most headaches are not emergencies, but some symptoms should not be ignored.
Seek prompt medical care for a headache that:
- Starts suddenly and is extremely severe
- Happens after a significant head injury
- Comes with weakness or numbness
- Causes trouble speaking
- Comes with confusion or loss of consciousness
- Causes major vision changes
- Is accompanied by a high fever or stiff neck
- Is very different from your usual headaches
- Continues to get worse without a clear reason
Chiropractic care is not a replacement for emergency or medical care when warning signs are present.
A Better Approach to Frequent Headaches
If headaches keep coming back, simply waiting for the next one may not be enough.
At Family Chiropractic of Alexandria, we look at the possible role of the neck, posture, movement, muscle tension, daily habits, and previous injuries. If chiropractic care or rehabilitation is appropriate, we can build a plan around your individual needs.
And if your symptoms suggest that another type of healthcare provider should be involved, we can help you understand the next step.
The goal is simple: understand what may be contributing to your headaches and help you move and function more comfortably.
This version also fits the services already described on the Family Chiropractic site, including posture correction, stretching, mobility work, strengthening, range-of-motion exercises, and rehabilitation. famchiroalexandria.com
