Describing Stretching

Alexandria Chiropractic Clinic Describes Stretching

Stretching can be an important part of chiropractic care and injury recovery. At Family Chiropractic of Alexandria, we may recommend simple stretches and movements to help improve flexibility, reduce stiffness, and support better movement.

Stretching does not require special equipment, and many stretches can be done at home, at work, or while traveling. When used along with chiropractic care, rehabilitation exercises, posture work, and strengthening, stretching can help your body move more comfortably.

Why Stretching Can Help

Tight muscles can make it harder for your joints and spine to move normally. This may lead to stiffness, limited motion, or discomfort during everyday activities.

Stretching may help:

  • Improve flexibility
  • Reduce muscle tightness
  • Support better posture
  • Improve range of motion
  • Make everyday movement easier
  • Support recovery after certain injuries
  • Prepare muscles for strengthening and rehabilitation exercises

Stretching can be especially useful for people dealing with ongoing stiffness or back pain, but the right exercises depend on the cause of your symptoms.

Stretch Slowly and Stay Comfortable

Stretching should not be painful. Move slowly and avoid forcing your body into a position.

Try to relax while you stretch and breathe normally. A slow, steady stretch is usually more useful than bouncing or pushing too far.

Your chiropractor or rehabilitation team may recommend certain stretches based on your condition, injury, mobility, and treatment plan. How often you stretch may also depend on your needs.

If a stretch causes sharp pain, numbness, tingling, dizziness, or worsening symptoms, stop and speak with your healthcare provider.

Two Simple Stretches and Exercises

These are common movements that may be used as part of a mobility or rehabilitation program. They are not right for everyone, so check with your chiropractor or healthcare provider before starting a new exercise.

Hip Flexor Stretch

The hip flexors are muscles at the front of the hip. When they become tight, they can affect posture and movement through the hips and lower back.

  1. Kneel on your right knee.
  2. Place your left foot flat on the floor in front of you.
  3. Keep your upper body upright.
  4. Gently move your hips forward.
  5. Stop when you feel a comfortable stretch in the front of your right hip.
  6. Hold for about 20 to 30 seconds.
  7. Switch sides and repeat.

Do not push into pain.

Pelvic Lift

A pelvic lift, sometimes called a bridge, can help work the muscles that support the hips, pelvis, and lower back.

  1. Lie on your back with your knees bent.
  2. Keep your feet flat on the floor about hip-width apart.
  3. Rest your arms beside you.
  4. Slowly lift your hips away from the floor.
  5. Gently tighten your buttock and core muscles.
  6. Pause briefly at the top.
  7. Slowly lower your hips back to the floor.
  8. Repeat several times as directed by your provider.

Keep the movement slow and controlled.

Stretching Is Only One Part of Better Movement

Stretching can help improve flexibility, but it is often only one part of a complete care plan.

Depending on your needs, care at Family Chiropractic of Alexandria may also include chiropractic adjustments, rehabilitation exercises, posture correction, core strengthening, balance and stability work, range-of-motion exercises, spinal decompression, and other supportive therapies.

Our Fitness & Rehab services are designed to help patients improve strength, mobility, stability, and movement as part of a personalized care plan.

Low-impact activity such as walking may also be helpful for some patients. The right combination of stretching, exercise, and treatment depends on your health, activity level, and the reason you are experiencing pain or limited movement.

Not Sure Which Stretches Are Right for You?

There is no single stretching routine that is right for everyone. A stretch that helps one person may irritate another condition.

Family Chiropractic of Alexandria can evaluate how you move, where you are experiencing pain or stiffness, and whether stretching, chiropractic care, rehabilitation, or another approach may be appropriate.

The goal is not simply to become more flexible. It is to help your body move with better comfort, control, and function.
